Hyderabad: Drinking water crisis looms large over Hyderabad as the State Irrigation Department has warned the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) that water levels in Krishna reservoirs depleted to all time low. If the catchment areas under Krishna river do not receive rains in the next 10 days, the water supply to the city may be stopped.

The Telangana State Irrigation Department informed the HMWSSB that reliability of the existing water resource through Nagarjunasagar reservoir cannot be assured. This was the major issue which was discussed in the review meetings with Telangana State Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and Commercial Taxes Minister T Srinivas Yadav recently. Water levels at Nagarjunasagar reservoir have plunged to new low.

It is below the minimum draw down level (MDDL) of 510 feet, the officials informed the government. The government directed the officials to complete the Krishna phase lll project and Godavari phase l at the earliest. The Chief Minister directed the officials to explore alternative arrangements to ensure continuous drinking water to the city.

Adding to woes, the HMWSSB Operations Director G Rameshwar told The Hans India that the reservoirs in the city - Osmansagar and Himayatsagar - dried up while Singur water level declined drastically in the wake of weak monsoons this year. To tackle the water crisis, the HMWSS was making alternative arrangements.

The official said the Irrigation Department has been requested to draw 10 tmcft of water through the Godavari Drinking Water Supply Project Phase-I from Yellampally Barrage between October and November. Meanwhile, the present water storage in Osmansagar is about 0.046 tmcft as against its capacity of 3.900 tmcft, while Himayatsagar has only 0.415 tmcft of water left as against 2.967 tmcft capacity.

Same is the case with Singur reservoir. Presently, Singur has only 2.127 tmcft of water as against its storage capacity of 29.917 tmcft. From Singur about 120 MGD of water is being supplied through emergency pumping to draw water from dead storage level.
