Hyderabad: Expressing concern over farmers' suicides, Telangana State Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy on Wednesday attributed it to the faulty policies of the previous Congress government.

Speaking to the media at the Secretariat here on Wednesday, Srinivas Reddy slammed the Opposition leaders for grossly inflating the number of farmers committing suicide up to 1,000.

He, however, admitted that as many as 409 farmers had so far committed suicide in the Telangana State. “The banks have so far disbursed Rs 6,631 crore loans to 15,00,131 farmers during Kharif season,” he said.

The State government was committed to the welfare of farmers would take remedial measures to ensure that there were no suicides by farmers, he said. He also expressed displeasure at some AP officials working in the banks in the Telangana State for forcibly collecting interests against norms from farmers for crop loans.

He said farmers were eligible to secure loans up to Rs 1 lakh and just 25 paise interest on loans up to Rs 3 lakh. As per the committee reports and GO 421, the government had so far released compensation to 141 families of farmers and the rest would be paid soon, the Minister said.

Srinivas Reddy appealed to the farmers not to resort to extreme steps and assured them that the government would provide all assistance to them. “We have written a letter to the Centre for crop insurance by taking every farmer as a unit,” he said.

Out of Rs 17,500 crore earmarked for crop loan waiver, including interest, the government had released half of the amount in two installments and the rest would be released soon in equal installments, he said.

The previous Congress government had failed to offer timely financial help and succor to the farmers and it added to their woes, he charged. “We will soon declare drought-hit mandals in the State after getting information from departments concerned,” he added.
