Hyderabad: Along the expected lines, the Telangana State government has increased the ex gratia being given to families of farmers committing suicides from Rs 1.5 to Rs 6 lakh. However, it comes with a rider. The rule will come into effect from Saturday. Respective District Collectors will settle any pending cases of ex gratia payment until Friday as per the old rule.

In a briefing after a six-hour long Telangana Cabinet meet held at Secretariat on Saturday, Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari stated that out of the Rs 6 lakh, Rs 1 lakh would be given for clearing debts owed by the deceased farmer while the remaining Rs 5 lakh would be given to kin of farmer. Further, Cabinet decided to extend Kalyanalakshmi scheme to daughters of the deceased farmers.

Stating that Cabinet was very saddened with the spate of farmers’ suicides in the State, he called upon them to repose trust in the government and not to lose heart. The TRS administration undertook various measures like waiver of crop loan, input subsidy, smooth supply of seeds and fertilisers as well as providing other facilities.

However, he said deficient rainfall and other factors had pushed farmers to take extreme steps. Srihari appealed to political parties not to politicise farmers’ issue and urged media and NGOs to work for creating confidence among farmers. He said that the farmers would also be provided nine hour power during day time from April 2016.The drought hit mandals would be declared after the end of monsoon (September 30) and issuing of guidelines by the Centre, he said.

Meanwhile, Cabinet decided to decrease purview of Agriculture Extension Officer from existing 5,000 hectares to 2,000 hectares. Since the State has cultivable area of 41 lakh hectares, 2,100 AEOs are necessary. Since the existing strength is 1,100, Cabinet gave a nod to appoint 1,000 more AEOs, he stated.

The Cabinet approved establishment of a Forest College in Mulugu of Medak district. It also decided to set up four police Battalions at Adilabad, Ranga Reddy, Khammam and Warangal district. A total of 3,896 posts, from constables to Commandants, would be created for the purpose.

The meeting decided to constitute three thrust groups for industrial promotion of the State. While the first group would deal with the countries like China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, the second with US, Canada and European countries and the third with Gulf nations as well as other states in India.

The groups, to be headed by senior officials, would take steps to attract investments from these countries The Cabinet did not discuss the issue of recent encounter in which two Maoists were killed in Warangal district. When asked Srihari said that the Home Minister had already reacted saying that it was an unfortunate incident and government would see that there was no recurrence of such incidents.

Meanwhile, the CPI state secretary Chada Venkat Reddy criticised the Cabinet decision to hike ex gratia with a rider. He demanded that the TRS government implement Rs 6 lakh exgratia with retrospective effect.
