Hyderabad: The University Grants Commission’s (UGC) decision to scrap fellowships for research scholars with Non-National Eligibility Test has evoked strong opposition from the student community.

About 120 students from universities like English and Foreign Languages, Osmania University and University of Hyderabad staged a protest at UGC Southern Eastern Regional Office here on Tuesday.

The protesting students demanded that the UGC immediately roll back its decision to discontinue with the UGC Non NET fellowships for research scholars. They demanded the funding agency to hike and extend the fellowship to all other State universities.

The decision of the UGC has come as a rude shock to the student community. “At the time when there was growing demand on the part of the research scholars availing the non-net fellowship to hike amount considering the financial burden, we face during the period of research.

This decision will adversely affect the motivational factors of the students to join the higher education and undertake research as a career option,” said, protesting students. The students presented a memorandum to the UGC Southern Eastern Regional Office Joint Secretary.
