Hyderabad: The future of over eight lakh Intermediate students is in a fix as Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education has granted affiliation to only 57 colleges in the State.
Of the 2,554 junior colleges, only 57 have been given provisional affiliation for the 2015-16 academic year. While there are about 361 colleges in Hyderabad, only one college has been given affiliation. In the neighbouring Ranga Reddy district, only 15 colleges have received affiliation out of a total of 521.
According to the data available with the BIE, the affiliation of colleges is on a downward trend. In the academic year 2014-15, 208 colleges got affiliation. In the year preceding it, 459 colleges were granted permission.
Sources said that the Board in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh was liberal in giving affiliation to the colleges. “Things have changed now. If colleges do not follow the norms, affiliation will be removed,” an official said. That apart, 273 colleges have un-authorisedly shifted their college premises. Of this, 119 colleges had put forward the proposal after shifting the colleges.
While the Board has disaffiliated the colleges, the fate of students studying in such colleges hangs in the balance. The Board invited applications for appearing for Intermediate Public Examination. However, there is no clarity that applications of students studying in the disaffiliated colleges would be accepted or not.
In a recently held meeting held by the Board, it was decided that students studying in disaffiliated colleges would not be enrolled with them. However, the Board has served notices to the colleges to rectify deficiencies to get affiliation before December. Telangana State BIE secretary A Ashok was unavailable for a comment.
