Hyderabad: Congress Rajya Sabha member V Hanumantha Rao on Saturday sat on a dharna in protest against the alleged omission of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s photograph in a newspaper advertisement released by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development.

“The advertisement released by Maneka Gandhi’s Ministry (Women and Child Development) in some newspapers had the photos of only the President and the Prime Minister. Nehruji was the Prime Minister for 17 long years. He was a freedom fighter and went to jail. He initiated public sector companies, irrigation projects and promoted science. They are trying to finish his legacy,” Hanumantha Rao told a news agency here. The alleged omission of Nehru’s photograph in the advertisement amounted to an insult to the 125-crore population of the country, he said. Rao, who sat on a dharna at Nehru statue, said he would organise protests at all schools if the ‘practice’ continued the next year too.

Meanwhile, Congress senior leader and former Union Minister S Jaipal Reddy strongly criticised the BJP-led NDA government for omitting the picture of Jawaharlal Nehru from the Children's Day advertisement published by the Union Women and Child Development Ministry.

Speaking to media persons at Gandhi Bhavan here on Saturday, Jaipal Reddy alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Ministers were behaving in an arrogant manner by not giving due importance to national leaders. He said Pandit Nehru and his family members had made many sacrifices for the country. By omitting Nehru’s picture from the advertisement, the BJP government was trying to set a wrong precedent of intolerance, he alleged.Addressing a separate press conference, Greater Hyderabad Congress president Danam Nagender also condemned the omission of Pandit Nehru’s photograph from the advertisements. He said that the act was an insult to all those participated in the freedom movement
