Hyderabad: The efforts of Telangana government to turn the State into a hub for aerospace and defence manufacturing has received further boost on Monday when Dr V K Saraswat, Member, NITI Aayog, favoured setting up of the country’s first smart aerospace manufacturing centre proposed by the central government, in TS. The first-of-its-kind facility, if comes through, will consist of a Centre of Excellence (CoE), design and manufacturing facility, and training institutions for personnel, among others.

India needs such a centre in the wake of fast-paced growth in defence and aerospace manufacturing space and Telangana is right place for it, Dr Saraswat told media on the sidelines of second, three-day Defence & Aerospace conclave here. Former Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister, he also serves as President of Aeronautical Society of India.

“I proposed such facility earlier and now as Member of NITI Aayog, I will take it forward and see that the facility is established in Telangana. It will develop new smart manufacturing processes for defence and aerospace,” he explained. The smart manufacturing facility can benefit from the software expertise prevalent in Hyderabad, he added.

The advanced manufacturing technologies to be developed by the new centre are expected to help in reducing wastage, lead time and costs, which are essential for growth of aerospace sector. Globally, India is the third largest aerospace market after the US and China and the market size is expected to touch $150 billion in next 10 years.

Continued on P4 With defence offset policy of 30 per cent localisation in place, the defence and aerospace manufacturing in India is projected to be an $80 billion opportunity by the year 2024. In this context, Saraswat feels Telangana should set a goal to attract nearly $10 billion (about Rs 66,500 crore) of that mammoth investment.

“At present, aerospace and defence industry is centered in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune, but with ease of doing business improving in Telangana due to the new industrial policy, the State is well-poised for growth in the key sector,” he maintained.

Earlier, Telangana Industries Minister Jupally Krishna Rao said that the State Government had been initiating several measures to transform Hyderabad as defence and aerospace hub. “Hyderabad is home to a large number of defence R&D laboratories in addition to scores of SMEs (small and medium enterprises) in this space. This ecosystem will help the city to achieve faster growth and become hub,” he said.
