Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metro Rail project would be extended by another 83 km in phase II. The Delhi metro too expanded over a period of time and the same would be done in Hyderabad as well, informed Minister for IT and Panchayat Raj K T Rama Rao on Friday.

The idea is to extend the metro to 200 km and cover peripheral areas, he added. The IT minister along with Deputy Chief Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali, Home Minister Nayani Narsimha Reddy, Minister for Prohibition and Excise T Padma Rao, Minister for Commercial Taxes Talasani Srinivas Yadav, Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) MD, N V S Reddy and L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad (L&TMRH) chief executive and managing director V B Gadgil went on a trial run between Mettuguda and Uppal station.

Underscoring the utility of the Metro Rail, KTR said that a trip between Mettuguda and Uppal took just eight minutes. Once the Metro Rail project is completed it would change the face of Hyderabad. Echoing a similar sentiment, Nayani Narsimha Reddy said that it would boost the brand image of Hyderabad.

In phase II, the stretches are Miyapur to Patancheru (13 km) Tarnaka to ECIL (7 km) Nagole via Falaknuma to Shamshabad (28 km), Raidurg to Gachibowli (28 km) and LB Nagar to Hayatnagar (7 km).

No change in realignment

There would be no realignment and the Hyderabad Metro Rail project would progress as per the original plan. This was told in no uncertain terms by IT and Panchayat Raj Minister K T Rama Rao. He said, “The reason for the delay is all options were examined in the Old City.” He further added that no heritage structures would be demolished and the project would be completed as per schedule which is 2017.

In response to the question of opening the stretch between Nagole to Mettuguda, he said that it would be thrown open to public in the first half of 2016.

It may be noted that the Nagole-Mettuguda stretch was to have opened on Ugadi day this year but the TRS government felt that it would be better if the service was extended till Secunderbad Station. Three RoBs between Alugadabavi and Secunderabad station are crucial for the completion of the stretch.

Even Delhi metro was extended to 200 km in a phased manner and the same would be followed in Hyderabad. The State Government is spending Rs 3,000 crore on the project .
