Adilabad: The Sadarmatt Anicut on the Godavari in Khanapur mandal of Adilabad district built by the Nizam in 1891-92 is lying in ruins. Its rusted gates are leading to wastage of precious water. With no water in the Sadarmatt crop are drying up.

  • Governments over years adopted negligent attitude
  • Anicut gates on the verge of collapse
  • With no water, farmers not raising crops for the last two years
  • Anicut canals taking water to fields are closed, in disuse

This project used to irrigate 35,000 acres and the farmers never experienced any hardship even in case of drought. The situation changed with governments over the years adopting a negligent attitude, leading to the anicut gates, with holes, on the verge of collapse. Yet the State government continues to be indifferent.

Due to the condition of the anicut, the farmers are not raising crops during the last two years. Even the anicut canals taking water to fields are closed and in disuse. Even if the project receives water there is no chance of it reaching fields.

The Sadarmatt anicut which used to be filled to the brim during the monsoon now has no water, with rocks at the bottom visible. This is causing anxiety among farmers as the irrigation needs of Khanapur, Jannaram and Kadam mandals are not being met. They allege that the government lacks interest in agriculture in sharp contrast to the stand taken by Nizams.

The government has proposed to convert the anicut into a reservoir with the possibility of providing irrigation facilities to about one lakh acres. The proposal is mentioned by the leaders often. But with the project lying neglected there is a question mark over the proposal. Farmers want the government to either repair the Sadarmatt project gates or replace them.
