State government urged to protect the interests of the farmers

Bodhan: The Nizam Sugar Factory farmers, workers, and Nizam Sugar’s Protection Committee has demanded that the State government immediately take over the factory and protect the interest of the farmers. The NSF Protection Committee, which has waging struggle for last 13 years against the privatisation of the factory, urged the government to ensure that factory is reopened immediately.

The NSF, established by then rural 6th Nizam in 1938 in 16,000 acres, had 6,000 workers. In 1980’s one of its units was shifted to Miryalaguda in Nalgonda district, leaving only one Bodhan with 3,600 workers. During the TDP regime, nearly 9,000 acres was distributed to Jogins between 1992 and 1996. Another 3,000 acres was auctioned. The TDP government under the leadership of the then Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu privatised the factory by selling 40 per cent share to the Deccan Sugars belonging to Gokaraju Gangaraju.

The government role in the factory became insignificant and Deccan Sugars management secured all rights over it. The Congress party under the leadership of Y S Rajasekhara Reddy constituted the House Committee which recommended retake over of the factory. Later, N Kiran Kumar Reddy, when he was the chief minister, constituted a seven-member committee which also recommended retake over of the factory.

Gangadharappa, CPI(M) Bodhan Division Secretary, Telangana Raithu Sangam Raitu Sangam General Secretary, demanded that the government immediately take over the factory.
