In the wake of reports that polio cases are detected in children of the migrant community, Telangana State government has paid attention to cover all the children of the particular communities in the first phase Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme (PPI) which would begin from January 17 in the State.

Hyderabad: In the wake of reports that polio cases are detected in children of the migrant community, Telangana State government has paid attention to cover all the children of the particular communities in the first phase Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme (PPI) which would begin from January 17 in the State.

In the four-day immunisation programme, the children below five years of age of the migrants at brick kilns, construction sites working as labourers, nomads and beggars would be administered vaccination.

The authorities have also been asked to cover other vulnerable groups like urban slum dwellers, residents of peri-urban areas, overlapping the surrounding panchayats, new colonies outside the towns, tourist groups and families with working hours that do not coincide with the team visits, agricultural families living or working in the fields.

State Health and Family Welfare Commissioner Buddha Prakash M Jyothi said that health staff, volunteers, ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, Mahila Mandali Members and student volunteers would be involved in the immunisation drive.

63 State level monitors have been deputed to monitor preparedness and implementation of PPI programme in all the 10 districts. The second phase PPI programme would be launched on February 21. The booth-level and house–to–house visits would be carried out to cover all the children in the programme, the official said.
