With a view to increase the voting percentage in the upcoming by-election to Narayankhed Assembly Constituency, Chief Electoral Officer has called upon the electronic media to come up with advertisements to empower illiterate voters in the constituency to exercise their franchise on February 13, the polling day for the by-election.

Addressing the media at the district Collectorate, he said that the administration was also hiring cultural troops with non-political affinity to educate and motivate the people to come out in huge numbers to vote. He said the sale of alcohol in the constituency and that coming from other states would be strictly monitored. Anybody travelling with huge amounts of money should carry necessary receipts and proof of the source of money along with them. He said live webcasting and video would be arranged in at least 248 polling booths out of the total 286 booths.
For security, he said about 700 armed forces of the six contingents of central forces and state police forces would be deployed from January 28. As many as 1,258 polling personnel, with one Central government Officer acting as a micro observer per polling station would be conducting the by-election. He asked voters to carry Elector’s Photo Identity Card (EPIC) and the voter slips which were issued to the electors in the next two weeks by the booth-level officers.
Those who do not have a voter slip can get it at the polling booth as well. He added that there were still some voter registrations pending, which would be registered in the next few days. Currently the total number of voters are 1,88,857. The nominations for the election started on Wednesday, with the Election Commission of India issuing the notification for the conduct of by-election.
On the first day, Congress candidate P Sanjeeva Reddy, son of P Kishta Reddy, the sitting MLA who passed away in August, 2015, filed in his nomination. Nominations would be accepted until 3 pm on January 27. The deadline for the withdrawal of candidature is 3 pm on January 30.
The elections would be held on February 13 from 7 am to 5 pm and the counting would be done on February 16, from 8 am onwards, the electoral
officer said.
