Khammam: Good news at last for Khammam after having denied a place in the ‘Smart Cities’ project with the news trickling in that the Central government has approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) submitted by the Khammam Municipal Corporation (KMC) to address the drinking water problem in the city.
It might be mentioned here that Khammam city was included in the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), another big-ticket urban renewal mission mooted by the Centre.
According to sources, the Centre, in its first phase, is stretching its eyes on addressing the drinking water problems in the cities included under the Mission.
Although Khammam city had a multitude of civic problems, drinking water is considered as the most perennial one as the issue had been haunting the denizens for many a decade.
Even though the city was transformed into Corporation a couple of years ago, not much was done to mitigate the water problem. It may be mentioned here that while the city needs around 50 MLD of drinking water a day, the Corporation is able to supply little over 32 MLD a day.
Since the city was included in the 500 cities that are to be covered under the AMRUT plan, the officials of the municipal corporation made a strong bid by preparing a DPR.
Speaking to The Hans India, Municipal Commissioner G Venugopal Reddy said: “The Centre has approved the DPR a couple of days. We have prepared a plan to address the water shortage problem with an outlay of Rs 350 crore. The corporation is likely to get around Rs 40 crore in the first phase under the programme.”
Khammam MLA Puvvada Ajay Kumar said: “In the first phase, utmost importance will be given to replace the age-old pipeline with a newer one.”
The DPR includes the estimation of pipeline from the water grid source, distribution lines, overhead tanks, motors and other infrastructure, he said. It’s learnt that works are likely to begin in the next month.
With this, the residents of Dwamsalapuram, VDOs Colony, Bank Colony, Khanapuram Haveli and other newly-merged areas of the corporation will feel a sigh of relief.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that the Centre had also agreed to develop a park in the city every year. According to officials, Rs 40 lakh to Rs 50 lakh will be sanctioned by the Centre each year for the purpose.
