Karimnagar: The State government is contemplating to release disciplined and well-behaved prisoners from various jails in the Telangana State. In this regard, the government recently framed new guidelines and circulated them to the heads of all prisons asking them to identify the prisoners who were having a good track record.

It may be recalled that the united Andhra Pradesh government had released 300 prisoners on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti in 2013. Though the Andhra Pradesh government set free the jail inmates on the occasion of Republic Day, the Telangana State did not do so. For the first time after formation of separate state, the Telangana government would be releasing the well-behaved prisoners of various prisons.

According to the sources, it is planning to release the jailbirds on the occasion of Telangana State Formation Day on June 2. The government, which had already framed guidelines, is likely to issue a GO in this regard after Narayankhed by-election. According to the new guidelines, the prisoners involved in child murder, rape and murder, double murder, communal murder and hatched conspiracy against the State were not eligible for release on compassionate grounds, the district jail sources said.

Apart from good behaviour, they should not have been involved in any of the above said cases. As many as 300 prisoners are likely to be freed across the State once the GO is issued by the government. About seven prisoners are eligible to be released from the Karimnagar district jail.

Speaking to The Hans India on Tuesday, Karimnagar District Jail Superintendent, N Shiva Kumar Goud said though nine prisoners were eligible for release, seven would be freed as the other two convicts had violated jail norms in the past. While a convict had escaped when he was released on payroll, another jailbird has been transferred to the district jail from Cherlapally jail on punishment, he said.
