Warangal: From being a major municipality in 1934 and becoming Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) in 2015, the Warangal civic body has served as a launch pad for many leaders to build their political career. Warangal civic body is one of the oldest one in Telangana.

The first election was held in 1952 under Hyderabad Municipal and Town Committees Act, 1951 and a committee was constituted. It was upgraded as Special Grade Municipality in July 1959 and into a Selection Grade Municipality in July 1960 and declared as Municipal Corporation on August 18, 1994.

Those started political career as councillors of the civic body have later become MLAs, MPs and ministers. Former minister Baswaraju Saraiah, Rajya Sabha member G Sudharani and Warangal (West) MLA D Vinay Bhasker are among such leaders in the current generation. Similarly, a stalwart politician in Warangal politics late T Hayagreevachary of Congress served as the first chairman of the municipality and later become minister.

Among the past generation leaders P Uma Reddy and A Buchaiah who got elected as MLAs have also began political life from the Warangal civic body. Engaging in the local body politics has helped the former minister Saraiah and MLA Vinay Bhasker to get connected to the people in their respective assembly constituencies, namely Warangal (east) and Warangal (west).

Saraiah got elected twice as the councillor and served as the municipal vice-chairman. While serving as corporator, Vinay Bhasker contested as MLA in 2009 and continued his winning spree. Referring to his time as in municipal politics, Vinay Bhasker said ‘Serving as corporator helped me to grow as leader of the masses.

The public following that I was able to create at that time still helps me to connect to the people’. The same is the opinion of former minister Saraiah. ‘My career as the member of Warangal municipality has taught me valuable lessons in reaching out to the people, which later helped me to become MLA and minister,’ he added.

Taking cue from the above leaders, a new entrant into the electoral politics, Jorika Ramesh, who is contesting on TRS ticket in the GWMC elections, said ‘I am intending to mould myself as a leader of the masses and the current election is a beginning’.
