Hyderabad: With the average day temperature over the past fortnight crossing 37 degree Celsius, the demand for power in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits has been steadily rising. Officials have estimated that the demand could touch 5.8 crore units by May this year.

According to Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL) officials, the demand has been on the rise, barring weekends when some of the industries remain shut.

Officials said that the consumption in February 2016 was recorded at 4.8 crore units whereas it was below 4.6 crore units during same period previous year. Officials said a lot more would depend on the temperature in the city since we have faced some unusually hot days in February compared to the previous year. The city recorded a record 38.2 degrees centigrade on Sunday, which is above 5.8 degrees more than the normal temperature in February.

Officials estimate that the demand for power would touch 5.8 crore units during May where the mercury levels are expected be at their peak. During the previous year, the consumption recorded was 5.33 crore units in Hyderabad. The rise in demand is not only because of rising temperature, but also due to the increasing per capita consumption. The power shortage has always been an issue during summer season and insufficient infrastructure was also one of the reasons.

However, officials in SPDCL said they were well prepared for summer. “We have taken up maintenance of transformers for the last three months and are doing tree trimming in the lanes and bylanes. We have taken steps to change conductors on 11 kv substations and replaced old conductors. I can say there will be no shortage of power this summer,” said J Sreenivasa Reddy, director operations of SPDCL.

The SPDCL director said the department was striving to ensure that there are no power cuts in any area in the city. With examination time approaching, instructions had been given to lower level staff not to take any line clearance (LCs) from Wednesday. There was no load shedding this time because of timely action by the staff, said Sreenivasa Reddy.
