Hyderabad: Senior Congress leader and five-time MLA Ramreddy Venkat Reddy died on Friday after protracted illness, said to be lung cancer, at a private hospitalhere. He was 72. He was representing Palair Assembly constituency in Khammam district.

Venkat Reddy served as Minister for Horticulture in the cabinet of N Kiran Kumar Reddy and was also a member of YS Rajasekhar Reddy cabinet. He was admitted to Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) on February 20 after his health condition deteriorated due to some respiratory problems.

The TRS government appointed him as the Chairman of Public Accounts Committee of Telangana State Legislature last year following the sudden demise of Narayankhed MLA P Kista Reddy.

Born to Kamalamma-Narayana Reddy in a predominantly agricultural family at Patalingala under Kamepalli mandal in Khammam district on May 22, 1944, Venkat Reddy was a graduate in BA from Osmania University.

His first three attempts (in 1985, 1989 and 1994) contesting Sujathanagar Assembly constituency were thwarted by Rajab Ali of the CPI. However, he later won the seat in 1996, 1999 and 2004.

After delimitation of constituencies, he was elected twice from Palair in 2009 and 2014 elections. While he defeated CPM’s Grand Alliance candidate Tammineni Veerabhadram in 2009, he retained the seat in 2014 by trouncing Pothineni Sudarshan Rao of the CPM and MB Swarna Kumari of the Telugu Desam.
