Warangal: Defying the odds and the strong winds of the ruling TRS party, a private school teacher and a vegetable vendor’s wife had achieved an unenviable task of winning the election to the 9th Division of the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) on Wednesday.

Indeed the victory of 34-year-old Somishetty Srilatha of the CPI (M) is like an oasis in the desert for the Left Parties in Warangal. Srilatha, a mother of two kids, who lives in a rented house in Siva Nagar, proved that an ordinary woman could make it to the political ranks of a civic body without having to spend lakhs of rupees when money bags were ruling the roost in politics.

Fielded by the party from the 9th Division (BC Women) that includes wide range of colonies – Siva Nagar, Grain Market, Dayanand Colony, Puppalagutta, western part of the Fort Warangal region and AC Reddy Nagar, she secured 3,755 votes of the 7,478 votes polled. The TRS candidate Murahari Bhagyalaxmi polled 3,350. The margin of the victory was 405 votes.

For over the years, this division is said to be a bastion for the CPI (M). And the CPI (M)’s hold in the region was not phenomena happened overnight but it was due to the party’s immense service to the poor and downtrodden for the last 26 years. Be it the ration cards or houses to poor or other basic amenities in the colonies, the party was in the forefront to exert pressure on the government.

One of the major successes the party is that around 1,000 families were accommodated in about 15 acres in the division. The division politics also claimed the lives of two CPI (M) leaders – Rama Surender, a former Councilor, and DYFI district president Kusuma Raghunath - in the past. Both the leaders were murdered by their rival group.

Speaking to The Hans India, Kakkerla Sudha said: “Over the years, we backed the CPI (M) nominee as the service and sacrifices made by the party are unimaginable and unforgettable.”CPI (M) state committee member Mettu Srinivas said: “The party also fared well and stood second in the 8, 10 and 12 Divisions. Due to incompetence of the Congress and the Telugu Desam, the TRS romped home in those divisions.”
