Nizamabad: The Nizamabad Gold and Silver Merchants Association staged a demonstration in front of Merchants association building on Saturday protesting against Union government’s decision to impose 1% central excise duty on gold ornaments.

Addressing the gathering, the Nizamabad Gold and Silver Merchants Association President P. Lakshmikanth said that the gold and silver merchants closed their business for last few days, because of Union government decision to impose 1% excise duty on gold ornaments, which would hit the merchants hard. He demanded the union government to immediately repeal the decision.

They would continue to hold protests till government abolishes the duty, he added. C Devidas, general secretary of the association said that with this tax, both the public and private merchants would be hit hard and would also increase in the harassments by the officials of the Excise department. He demanded the government to immediately remove this tax.
