Khammam: Any such move by the State government that allows private people to lay their hands on the proposed steel factory at Bayyaram would be stoutly opposed by the Congress, former minister and Rajya Sabha member Garlapati Renuka Chowdhury said.

The firebrand leader, who is on a three-day visit to the district, said on Friday that the governance in the country fell apart with the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre and the TRS rule in the State failing miserably in handling several core issues that have been plaguing the people.

“There is an undercover operation to hand over the proposed steel factory to private parties which is totally unacceptable,” Chowdhury alleged, expressing fears that the move would jeopardize the employment opportunities of the local people. The Congress would not sit idle if the government ignores to take up the steel factory as a public sector unit, she said.

Talking on problems faced by the people in the district, she accused the TRS government of lacking vision in addressing the drinking water crisis which has already been blown out of proportion. She found fault with the government for dilly dallying over the construction of several irrigation projects in the name of redesigning.

“This has cost the farmers a lot,” she said, criticising the rulers for not fulfilling their loan waiver promise totally. Chowdhury claimed that it was during her stint as the Union Tourism Minister that Khammam had witnessed several tourism development activities.

This apart, she also claimed credit for establishing Kendriya Vidyalaya, Tularam project and Tribal Battalion in the district. When asked to spell out her future plans, Chowdhury said she was ready to contest from anywhere as wished by the party high command.
