Mahbubnagar: The district administration is planning to conduct 40-day summer camps for all government school students to improve their mathematical capabilities and thereby improve the literacy rate and enrolment rate for higher classes in the district.

In view of this, district collector Dr T K Sridevi held a meeting with bank officials and authorities of Education Department and sought their suggestions and support to make the summer camp progarmme for the students a big
success.

For this purpose, the district administration is planning to select about 1,050 students from 4th to 7th classes from across 2,600 schools and has decided to conduct the summer camps in three regions.

“The main aim of the summer camp is to train the students to improve their mathematical skills. This will encourage the students to improve their self confidence and improve the literacy rate as they go into the higher levels of education,” informed the collector.

The collector expressed concern particularly with regard to the lowest level of literacy among the girl children in the district. As per a survey conducted to identify the number of students passing SSC and enrolling for higher classes, it is observed that out of 1.25 lakh students who passed SSC during the past three years, only 45,000 of them successfully enrolled for Intermediate education and among them only 23,000 were enrolled for degree-level studies.

After completion of their graduation, only 50 per cent of them i.e. 12,500 were enrolled in to Bachelor of Education (B Ed) courses.

Going by this survey, at every stage of higher education, about 50 per cent of students are dropping out of the education for various reasons. “Majority of students after SSC stop their education either to support their families or to work as laborers in cotton fields.

It is high time that we need to find out ways and means to encourage students to pursue education while working. The students need to inculcate education as a habit for which the education system and the government schools should be improved,” opined the collector.

For improving education system in the district, the district collector has already released funds to establish laboratories for smart classes.

In fact, the collector is encouraged by last year’s summer camp conducted by Vandemataram Foundation in Kalwakurthy where 100 students were successfully trained to improve their mathematical skills. The district collector has sought everyone’s support and asked interested donors to contribute financial support.
