Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao, who led a delegation consisting of ministers C Laxma Reddy, Jupally Krishna Rao and MLA G Balaraju, met Karnataka Minister for Irrigation M B Patil in Bengaluru on Thursday.

The delegation explained to Patil about the acute drought conditions in Mahbubnagar district. Patil assured them that he would talk to Krishna Jal Nigam officials and the Chief Minister about the release of water.

He also suggested that the pending issues pertaining to the Rajoli Banda Diversion scheme should be resolved amicably through consultations so that there would be no objection from farmers of Mahbubnagar district.

Following this, Harish Rao spoke to the Andhra Pradesh Irrigation Minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao over phone from Benguluru since RDS involves all the three States.

Umamaheswara Rao informed Harish that they can hold talks after May 4 on the issue. Both AP and TS government will also discuss about rehabilitation of Pulichintala project evacuees, Harish Rao said.

During his talks with Karnataka Irrigation Minister Harish Rao said that the works on RDS have been pending for long time.

He said as per tribunal award 15.9 tmc of water was due to Mahbubnagar district to cater to irrigation requirements of 87,500 acres it had never received more than 5 tmc to 6 tmc of water.

He also pointed out that there have been many instances of water being illegal utilised and diverted by farmers of Karnataka.

The united AP government had sanctioned Rs 72 crore and deposited Rs 59 crore with Karnataka government. In eight years, only 29 percent of the works to increase the height of the RDS anicut have been completed, he said.

Responding to the issues raised by TS ministers, Patil said that they could resolve all contentious issues through negotiations.
