Nizamabad: Forests and BC Welfare Minister Jogu Ramanna urged people to make Green Telangana a reality by joining the government’s massive campaign to plant 230 crore saplings in three years from 2015. The saplings are to be planted in non-forest areas 120 crore, forests 100 crore and town areas 10 crore.

He, along with Minister Srinivas Reddy, visited social forestry nursery in Antampalli and a nursery in Kamalapur run by Dwma on Thursday.

Later speaking to the media, Ramanna said that Green and Bangaru Telangana would become a reality if the prestigious programmes like the Mission Kakatiya, Mission Bhagiratha and Telangana Haritha Haram are effectively implemented.

Ramanna said the green cover would go up from 23 to 33 per cent by taking up the Green Telangana programme. Officials have been instructed to provide the saplings under the aegis of the ‘Grama Harita Rakshana’ committees. ‘These would be planted once the monsoon commences.

He revealed that Union Minister Prakash Javadekar was keen about the programme and the chief ministers of other states have been advised on its implementation.

As against the expected Central grant of Rs 156 crore for the programme, Rs 56 had already been received by the State.

Srinivas Reddy stated that the target of 230 crore saplings could be achieved if each person plants 11 saplings. He said a target of 3.35 crore saplings has been fixed for the district this year.

Among those present were PCCF P K Sharma, CCFO A K Sinha, additional PCCF Sunil Kumar Gupta and forest officials Sujata and Prasad.
