State govt apprises NGT on benefits of project in Hyderabad

  • TS tells National Green Tribunal that Green House Gas (GHG) CO2 being emitted on the KBR Park stretch will come down from 10.74 lakh tonnes at present to 6 lakh tonnes after completion of SRDP.

Hyderabad: The State government has initiated necessary measures to speed up the stalled prestigious Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) in the city. Against the backdrop of the hue and cry made by several organisations against the SRDP project at the KBR Park, the government has submitted a detailed report to National Green Tribunal (NGT) on the environmental impact of the project.

The project works has come to a grinding halt following the NGT directive to the government to stop all works on environmental grounds following a complaint by city-based environmental organisations. Dispelling fears over the number of trees to be dislocated from the project site, the government, in its submission, said “no tree will be chopped inside KBR Park under the project.

The total number trees that will be uprooted is only 1,394, of which 761 are along the outer perimeter, 300 from the central median and 333 trees will be chopped off from private properties along eight junctions near the park.” Officials of the State Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA and UD) said the study conducted by a private consultancy confirmed the number of trees to be uprooted surrounding the park area.

“Government informed the tribunal the benefits of SRDP project in containing air pollution on the busy KBR park stretch where the pollution levels are going up due to increased vehicular traffic,” said State Special Chief Secretary to Municipal Administration and Urban Development ( MA&UD) M G Gopal.

He said the quantum of Green House Gas (GHG) CO2 emitted on the KBR park stretch was more than 10.74 lakh tonnes at present. Once the project was completed, the co2 emission would be reduced to six lakh tonnes. The report said the smooth flow of vehicular traffic on the flyovers being constructed under SRDP would significantly reduce GHG emissions.

The government had already filed a petition before the tribunal requesting it to vacate the stay and hoped that the case would be disposed of by July-end. The official said the hurdles in land acquisition for the project would be addressed soon after the NGT gave its approval. A massive awareness programme on the importance of SRDP among organisations fighting against the projects would also being conducted soon.
