Mahbubnagar: The widening of roads on National Highway 167 has begun in Mahbubnagar. To begin with, the contractors have already started the excavation works from Mayuri near Kothatanda village to Jadcherla along a stretch of 5 kilometers.
At present, the 5 meter wide single lane road is extended to a width of 12 meters. Accordingly, the contractor is digging trenches on both the sides of the road. “We have started the works initially from Mayuri to Jadcherla. We will continue this work along the whole 54 kilometer stretch from Jadcherla to Marikal and are expecting to complete the entire project in the next three years,” said Injareddy, the contractor.
During the initial phase, the National Highway Authorities have decided to widen and convert the single lane road into a two-lane National Highway between Jadcherla and Marikal with a cost of Rs. 75 crores. “We have got all the clearances from the forest and other departments.
Almost 95 percent of culvert and bridge works are completed. Major trees in the way have also been cleared and handed over the works to the contractors. We are hoping that the new National Highway will be ready in the next two years,” says Surender, Executive Engineer, National Highways Authority.
In fact, the state government had proposed to extend the National Highway from Raichur in Karnataka to Miryalaguda in Telangana, and further connecting to Guntur in Andhra Pradesh. In the initial phase, the central government had accorded the National Highway status to the stretch between Raichur and Jadcherla linking new NH 167 to NH 44 at Jadcherla.
Heavy road excavation machinery like Hitachi, Bulldozers, JCBs, trucks etc are being used for excavation and widening of roads. All along the 5 kilometer stretch from Jadcherla to Mayuri, safety barricades are erected and works are in full progress.
