Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao called upon citizens to actively participate in the Telanganaku Haritha Haram programme on Friday and reiterate his commitment to the massive plantation drive initiated by the State government.

The green drive, which would be kick-started by the Chief Minister at Chityal in Choutuppal in Nalgonda district, would see a record 46 crore saplings being planted in one season.

Arrangements have been made to plant 25 lakh saplings in Hyderabad which is another record and the third record is that the greenery programme would be taken up along the 163-km stretch of national highway connecting Vijayawada.

The aim of the green drive is to increase forest cover to 33 per cent from the existing 24 per cent in the State. The national green cover is just 22 per cent.

The massive afforestation drive beginning Friday would continue for two weeks. The Chief Minister asked officials to distribute saplings to people through hundreds of nurseries and distribution points across the State.

The Chief Minister directed ministers, MLAs, MPs, MLCs, other peoples’ representatives, officials, self-help groups, women, NGOs, students and people to participate and involve themselves in a big way to make the green drive successful in their home districts, towns and villages.

As many as 25 departments prepared plans to make the green programme a huge success. As part of the programme 230 crore saplings would be planted with the help of 4,213 nurseries over the next three years.

According to the plan, 100 crore saplings would be planted in forest areas, 120 crore saplings under social forestry and 10 crore saplings in the city alone.

It was planned to plant a total of 10 crore saplings in parks, offices and vacant places, including seven crore in HMDA limits and three crore in GHMC limits.
