Hyderabad: Infants born at five government maternity hospitals in the city were to be issued Aadhaar cards from July 15 but there is no mechanism in place as of now, to take the project forward.

Earlier this month the government had announced that the parents along with the discharge report would be handed over the Aadhaar card and birth certificate of the child.

The scheme was to be implemented at Government Maternity Hospital in Nayapul, Government Maternity Hospital in Sultan Bazar, Niloufer Hospital, Osmania General Hospital and Gandhi Hospital.

Hospital authorities at all the government maternity hospitals stated that they did not receive the kits. Dr V Ratna Kumari, Superintendent of Koti Government Maternity hospital said that an introductory programme for the staff has been conducted and the scheme would take off once the kits are received.

Authorities at Niloufer hospital are still clueless about the scheme. One of the four RMOs at the hospital on condition of anonymity said, “We have not heard from any higher officials regarding this scheme. We are still following the old procedure of preparing the data of births.”

The same is the case with the other three hospitals in the city. According to the senior administrative staff at the hospitals, the government needs to first train the staff on the software. The linking mechanism is not so easy and it would take time before things fall in place.

GHMC staff to be employed at the hospitals. The kit that was supposed to be supplied includes a tab based application, fingerprint device and broadband connectivity. None of the hospitals have received information on this to date.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in association with CSC e-Governance Services India Limited under the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology is implementing the project.

It may be recalled that the government had announced that all new born babies would be given the Aadhaar card along with the birth certificates starting from July 15.

A staff member at Koti hospital said that an introductory session was conducted in which they were told that they would have to store separate information for babies born with cerebral palsy. Digital locker accounts would be created for new-borns.
