Warangal: Haritha Haram programme would be an effective remedy to the drought conditions being faced by the State due to scanty rainfall, Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari said.

He said protecting and improving the green cover would help get abundant rainfall, besides addressing the problem of ever increasing pollution. The Deputy Chief Minister took part in the plantation programme organised by Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) in the city on Friday.

Addressing the gathering, Srihari noted that Haritha Haram was the third biggest plantation programme taken up in the world. The objective was to enhance forest cover from the existing 24 per cent to 33 per cent in the State.

For that purpose, it was planned to plant 230 crore saplings in four years duration, he added.Kadiyam Srihari along with Mayor N Narender, MLAs T Rajaiah and A Ramesh has planted saplings at the GWMC premises and asked the corporation officials to supply five fruit bearing saplings to each household in the city.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Narender said there were about 1.8 lakh houses in the city. “In the second phase of Haritha Haram, we are planning to plant 20 lakh saplings as against the target of 15 lakh under the corporation limits,” he said.

The leaders of Municipal Employees Union decided to contribute their one-day salary to the Haritha Haram programme and handed over a letter of consent to the Deputy Chief Minister during the event.

Kadiyam also attended a similar event at historic Inavolu village. He along with ZP Chairperson G Padma, MLA A Ramesh, RDO Venkata Madhava Rao, Inavolu Sri Mallijarjuna Swamy Temple Executive Officer K Sheshu Bharathi planted saplings.

About 4,000 saplings were planted on either side of a four kilometre-road stretch leading to the village.The Minister later on the day chaired a review meeting on the progress of Haritha Haram programme in the district. GWMC Mayor Narender, Deputy Mayor Khaja Sirajuddin, MLAs D Vinay Bhasker, T Rajaiah, Ch Dharma Reddy and M Yadagiri Reddy, Joint Collector Prashanth Patil and others were present.
