Warangal: The honchos of GW-MC, TSTDC and common public here are elated at Warangal winning ‘Best Heritage City Award’ for 2014-15. The award is announced in New Delhi on Saturday. It is for the second time the city has won the award. In the past the city won the award for the year 2011-12.
Reacting over the award winning, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national general secretary P Muralidhar Rao said ‘The Centre has recognised Warangal, a cultural capital in Telangana, as a tourism hub with great potential for development’.
The award affirms the Centre’s view point, he said adding that the Centre which sanctioned HRIDAY, AMRUT and Smart City Scheme to Warangal is planning to launch many more developmental works here.
TS Tourism Development Corporation (TSTDC) Chairman Pervaram Ramulu, who expressed pleasure at the award to Warangal, said ‘It will boost the tourist activity here. The place will attract many foreign and domestic tourists in the days to come’.
He asked the citizens in the city to act courteously with the tourists while asking the taxis and auto drivers not to cheat the visitors. It might damage the reputation of the city, he pointed out.
The Kaloji Kala Kshetram, which is being readied in Hanamkonda, will also contribute to tourism activity once it is completed. The State government is spending around Rs 50 crores for its construction, he added.
The GWMC Mayor, N Narender, said the award is a privilege for Warangal and Telangana. Everyone should feel proud at the Kakatiya legacy. ‘Drawing inspiration from this we will work passionately to make Warangal as an international city and a best tourist destination’, he told The Hans India.
Efforts are on for the beautification of the city, while focusing on providing basic amenities, improving traffic and to ensure safety and security of tourists, the Mayor said while GWMC Commissioner Sarfaraz Ahmed said the award accorded a special place to Warangal in world tourism.
‘The first rope way in the State is set to come up in Warangal between the Padmakshi Temple hillock and Bhadrakali Temple,’ the Commissioner said as a senior citizen P Narsimha Reddy of Excise Colony felt that the city deserves the award since there are several historical structure here.
