New Delhi: CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury asked the Centre to implement all the promises made to Andhra Pradesh during the bifurcation. Speaking to Telugu media after a two-day politburo meeting here on Sunday, Yechury said his party had cautioned the Centre against haste in bifurcating the state.

The special category status to AP was promised both by the BJP, then in Opposition, and then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the floor of the House during a debate on the bill. He recalled that BJP senior leader M Venkaiah Naidu had promised 10 years of special category status to the state and TDP's Chandrababu Naidu had joined hands with the BJP expecting the same.

It was improper on part of the BJP now to ignore the promise and seek shelter behind technicalities, he said. Yechury assured the MRPS that his party would support its agitation for the SC categorisation. The MRPS leaders have been meeting leaders of all political parties to press for the categorization, while its rival, Mala Mahanadu, has also been staging protests on and off against the categorisation.
