Hyderabad: The Transport Department’s move to impose limits on the number of slots for transactions involving transport vehicles every day has drawn flak from a various section of the society.

Auto-rickshaw unions are crying foul at the Transport Department’s move, alleging that the step would encourage brokers and pave the way for corruption, and thereby defeating the purpose of embarking on paperless and cashless in all RTAs.

According to sources, the Transport authorities have imposed a limit on the number of slots to be booked for transactions pertaining to transport vehicles. The officials have restricted the number to 30 per day in different RTA offices and 60 in central zone RTA office.

The Telangana Transport Department had started offering all its services online from August 2 and stopped the use of manual application process. There have been several technical glitches resulting in inconvenience to motorists across the state. Some of the glitches included denial of second transaction within the same working day and committing typographical mistakes by mee-seva personnel etc.

Sources said the issues not only involved issuing of fitness certificates, but also tourist permits, other State vehicle permits (this requires national database to process) and late fee.

Auto union leaders have alleged that the move of the officials would only add to the woes of motorists and cause great inconvenience to them.

Telangana Auto and Motor Welfare Union general secretary M Dayanand said any new facility must citizen-friendly and there would be no meaning if it resulted in more inconvenience to people.

He said there was no restrictions earlier on the limit of transactions when the manual transaction system was in vogue. But officials had now imposed restrictions without any formal orders from the Transport Department.

“If a vehicle owner needs fitness certificate on a particular date and if there is no slot on the due date, he cannot bring out his vehicle. Otherwise his vehicle will be seized for want of fitness certificate. He will be facing punishment for no fault of his,” said Dayanand.

The auto union leader questioned as to who would be responsible for the non-issuing of fitness certificate in time. “Will the Transport Department take the responsibility,” he asked.
