Nizamabad: The special drive taken up by the police, RTA and Excise departments in the district headquarters following the death of 9-year-old Ramya in a ghastly road accident in Hyderabad, has lost its momentum with the passage of time.

Drunk driving has become quite common in these days on National Highway 44 after midnight due to lack of effective monitoring. The restriction on sale of liquor to youngsters below 21 years of age is not being enforced strictly.

Liquor is available round-the-clock at dhabas located adjacent to the highway at Kamareddy. But, no action has been initiated against dhaba owners.

Though Superintendent of Police P Vishwa Prasad vowed to promote road safety by curbing drunk driving, police stations are yet to get breath analysers to conduct the special drive on a regular basis.

It is an open secret that the traffic police are conducting the special drive against drunk driving for namesake only and that too to realize its fine target.

No step has been taken to promote awareness about the harmful consequences of drunk driving to bring about an attitudinal change in youngsters who take the wheel in an inebriated condition.

It is innocent pedestrians and other road users who are falling prey to drunk driving. Traffic violations galore on major arteries of the town. The highway has become more prone to mishaps at night due to rash driving.

The newly constituted road safety committee is yet to start functioning in a full-fledged manner to curb the rate of mishaps in the district.

Expressing concern over the rise in road mishaps in recent times, people of Nizamabad are of the view that the traffic police, RTA and Excise departments need to work in a coordinated manner to promote road safety.

Action should be taken against dhaba owners selling liquor illegally to check mishaps on highways, they said.
