Hyderabad: More than two years after the formation of Telangana State, the government has decided to scrap the zonal system. Stating this here on Saturday after the state Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao said that in undivided Andhra Pradesh Six zones were created through a Presidential Order in 1973 to give equitable job opportunities to Seemandhra and Telangana regions. After the formation of Telangana, the state got only two zones - Zone V and VI and the system has now become redundant.

KCR said he had already discussed the issue with various employees’ associations who had hailed the proposal. Replying to a question, he said the government proposes to scrap the zonal system through a Presidential Order just as the Andhra Pradesh government accorded local status to the children of those employees who migrated to the residuary state after bifurcation.

The scrapping of the zonal system is likely to come into force after the creation of new districts which is under progress. After scrapping the zonal system, KCR said that only two cadres, district and state cadre would be there. He assured the employees selected under the zonal system that their rights like promotions and salary hikes would be protected even after doing away with the zonal system.
