CASH-FOR-VOTE SCAM

Hyderabad: The Principal Special Judge for Special Police Establishment (SPE) and Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) cases on Monday directed the ACB Director General A K Khan to submit a detailed report on the analysis of the voice samples recovered in the cash-for-vote scam. The infamous scam has resurfaced to haunt Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

The court set the deadline for the ACB to complete the investigation by September 29. The court order came on the petition filed by YSR Congress MLA of Mangalagiri Alla Ramakrishna Reddy. The petitioner submitted to the court the forensic report given by a private laboratory, claiming that the voice sample in the telephonic conversation with Anglo-Indian MLA Elvis Stephenson was that of Naidu (AP Chief Minister). Based on this, the court ordered reinvestigation.

It may be recalled that during the Legislative Council elections, the Telugu Desam Party, which lacked strength to get its candidate elected, allegedly tried to bribe Elvis Stephenson. The ACB charged TDP MLA A Revanth Reddy approaching with an offer to pay bribe running into several crores of rupees on May 30 last year.

Revanth Reddy and party functionary Sebastian were caught in sting operation while allegedly paying Rs 50 lakh to Stephenson. Later, audio tapes of Chandrababu Naidu’s alleged telephonic conversation with Stephenson surfaced. The AP Chief Minister allegedly tried to goad the Anglo-Indian MLA to support the TDP candidate.

The ACB investigating the case has filed a preliminary charge- sheet making TDP MLA A Revanth Reddy and three others as a main accused in the cash for vote scam. The charge-sheet has TDP president and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Naidu’s name but not as an accused, witness or party.
