Hyderabad: A woman working as a lecturer at a government college was duped to the tune of Rs 34.5 lakh by a cyber criminal, who impersonated as a doctor. Police said the woman uploaded her profile on a matrimonial site seeking a groom in March this year.

She received a reply from a person Arun Michael Bapu. He introduced himself as an Orthopaedic surgeon working in Bhagdad and convinced her for marriage. One day, she received a call from unidentified person that a parcel has come for her from Iraq, which contained huge cash and jewellery. The caller told her that she has to pay Rs 50,000 towards customs clearance at the RGI Airport.

Within hours, she received another call from Arun saying that he was stopped by the customs officials at the airport and they wanted some money to let him go and release the parcel seized. She deposited Rs 34.5 lakh in the bank accounts given by Arun. When she realised she was duped, the woman approached the police and lodged a complaint.
