Hyderabad: Governor ESL Narasimhan on Wednesday summoned Special Chief Secretary of Education Department Ranjiv Acharya to the Raj Bhavan and enquired about the steps being taken by the government for regulating fee in private schools.

According to highly placed sources, the Governor wanted to know from the Special Chief Secretary the fee structure in private schools and whether the government would be regulating the fee structure in private schools.

A movement is gaining traction in the State with regard to the exorbitant fee in private schools. The Telangana State Parents’ Teachers Association has taken up cudgels against the government on the issue. Dharnas have been held in front of some schools about the abnormal fee and steep hikes every year in the city.

The association has alleged that private schools are demanding lakhs of rupees towards fee and subjecting students to humiliation for non-payment of fee. Even though there was regulation of fee in private engineering, medical and other professional colleges, such system was absent in the case of private schools in the State.

Though the government said that it would regulate fee structure in private schools, no action had been taken so far. The Education Minister told the Assembly that fee regulation would be brought in private school sector. In private schools, fee starts at Rs 9,000 for three- month term, and there is no upper limit.

The international schools are collecting more than one lakh rupees per year. Private schools are being run in different names like international, techno and others. On an average, each parent is spending Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh for education in private schools. As for government schools, parents are not inclined to send their wards to them fearing low quality of teaching.

Apart from regular fee, amounts are being collected from students on various occasions under various heads. Separate amounts are charged for uniform, text books, while transport charges are also quite heavy.

The parents associations have alleged that the education department officials are not regulating fee as many private schools belong to leaders of the ruling party or to influential people.

The Governor also discussed about the scouts and guides issue with the Special Chief Secretary in the meeting on Wednesday.
