Study problems of women undertrials: HC to Telangana, AP
The High Court at Hyderabad has directed both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana State governments to undertake a study on the conditions of undertrial women prisoners in the jails and accordingly make recommendations to alleviate their problems.

A division bench comprising Justice C V Nagarjuna Reddy and Justice M S K Jaiswal gave this direction on Thursday during the course of hearing of a public interest litigation that arose out of a letter written to the court by the Secretary of AP Legal Services Authority seeking direction to both the State governments to address the problems of women undertrials and their children, pregnant prisoners.
The court had during the last hearing directed the Legal Services Authorities of both the States to send their district secretaries to the jails and study the conditions and submit a report. The Legal Services Authorities submitted their reports to the bench on Thursday. The report also dealt with the special needs of the mentally-challenged women prisoners languishing in the jails.
Telangana Special Government Pleader Sharat Kumar submitted to the court that the details given in the Legal Services Authority report were not up to date. He suggested that the District Legal Services Authorities must be engaged in the monitoring of conditions of these women prisoners.
The counsel for the Legal Services Authority J Anil Kumar submitted that the health officials in the district usually monitor the health issues of such prisoners and that it should be continued.
The bench directed the Women and Child Welfare Department and Jails Department of both the States to undertake a survey on the conditions of these undertrials keeping in mind the report submitted by the Legal Services Authority and come up with recommendations to mitigate their problems. The matter has been adjourned by four weeks.
