Hyderabad: The TSRTC which saved Rs 6 crore using bio diesel last year has now decided to convert 20 per cent of its fleet of buses into bio diesel and CNG variants.

As a measure of introducing green technologies the Corporation has started using Ultra low Sulphur Diesel Oils and alternate fuels like Bio-fuels and CNG on a large scale. Presently, some of these variant buses are in operation in twin cities, Khammam, Cantonment, Hakimpet and Medchal and others.

The State Pollution Control Board (PCB) had asked the RTC Greater Hyderabad to covert at least 10 per cent of its fleet into CNG so as to cut down the pollution on the city roads. The Corporation has a bus fleet of 10,500 and the Greater Hyderabad zone has over 3,800 buses in 28 depots. The zone operates 9.74 lakh kilometres per day and transports 34.02 lakh commuters and earns Rs 31.68 per km.

In its bid to control vehicular pollution, the TSRTC had earlier taken up the initiative to convert over 300 diesel variant buses into CNG with an expenditure of Rs 20 crore.

The official said that the corporation would take up conversion of diesel variant buses, which were procured under JNNRUM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission). The JNNURM buses were not up to the standards compared to the RTC’s regular fleet.

The corporation has changed body of the buses and is now contemplating to make the change into CNG and bio-diesel variant.

During the KMPL awards, the RTC Chairman S Satyanarayana said that because of the use of bio diesel, the corporation was saving Rs 6 crore every year on the diesel expenditure. RTC executive director M Ravinder said that the corporation consumes diesel worth Rs 1,000 crore every year.

He said that the Corporation was using bio diesel in about 30 depots. “Bio diesel comes at a cheaper price. One liter of bio diesel is mixed with ten liters of diesel. About Rs 4 is saved on liter of diesel,” said Ravinder.
