Hyderabad: The Telangana government is all set to revise the existing tax structure in all revenue-generating departments. This is likely to put nearly Rs 3,000 crore more tax burden on the people in the 2017-18 financial year.

Usually, the revenue-generating wings increase targets by 10 to 15 per cent every year. But this time, the officials of the Commercial Taxes, Excise and Prohibition, Stamps and Land Registrations and Transport departments have been told to project higher increase of the taxes and also plug the loopholes in tax collections.

The Commercial Taxes department, main revenue-generating department which would be mopping up Rs 43,115 crore in 2016-17, has already decided to increase VAT being collected from restaurants and other eateries including luxury hotels by at least 10 per cent from April 1. This would help the government earn Rs 1000 crore additionally.

The tax structure for the commercial establishments, which do not come under the GST, will also be revised to generate Rs 500 crore more.Service charges being collected from Mee-Seva centres would also become expensive as the government proposes to increase the charges by at least 10 per cent. The Mee- Seva centres have been offering more than 100 services like issuance of birth certificates, income and resident certificates and permissions to establish schools and industries through online.

Similarly, the service charges on the state services like online electricity bill payment, online water bill payment, property tax and sales taxes would be increased slightly, The Transport department has already increased the fee for issuing driving licences and vehicle registrations. Now it proposes to hike the charges on other services as well, a senior official told The Hans India.

The Stamps and Land Registrations department has already prepared proposals to increase the registration charges and stamp fee. The Excise department is contemplating to increase excise duty on liquor sales as the department has been asked to increase revenue targets from Rs 14,500 crore in 2016 to Rs 16,000 crore in the 2017-18 financial year.

The Municipal Administration and Urban Development department would increase service charges on drinking water supply, sanitation and street lighting. The department also proposes to impose market cess in the urban local bodies. A decision on exact quantum of increase would be taken at the time of finalising the revenue targets for each department, the sources added.
