Hyderabad: The state government on Wednesday assured the High Court at Hyderabad that the appointment for the posts of police constables will not be finalised in the next one week.

A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice Shameem Akhter recorded the assurance of the special government pleader, B Mahender Reddy, to this effect.

The division bench expressed prima facie opinion that the ongoing selection process for the appointment of police constables undertaken by the Telangana state government was faulty.

The division bench made this observation while hearing a Public Interest Litigation petition filed by one Srinivas Goud alleging large-scale irregularities in police constables recruitment undertaken in Telangana.

The bench questioned as to how those who got less than cut-off marks of 80 were being accommodated in General Category as was shown in the case of a candidate who secured only 64 marks.

The special government pleader sought time to file a detailed explanation in this regard and assured that the appointments will not be finalised until then. He said scrutiny of certificates itself would take around four weeks at the least and therefore sought time to come up with a detailed response.

However, counsel for the petitioner opposed this plea and sought interim stay on the entire process as the word of the government cannot be believed. The bench recorded the assurance of the special government pleader and adjourned the matter to Monday.
