Wanaparthi: Government Degree College students, Mahesh and Chandra Sekhar, on Monday spotted a rare species of a snake family at Sangenenipalli Thanda in Vepanagandla mandal.

College Assistant Professor B Sadashivaiah with the help of German scientist Gernat identified the snake as Lycodon Flavicollis. It is also known as a Yellow-collared wolf snake as it has a yellow strap on the neck.

It has a slender shiny body with dark brown colour. The snake which is not venomous could grow up to 40 cm. While the other species of the serpent family prefer night time, to get out of hiding, this one goes around during daytime.

Sadashivaiah said the species was first spotted at Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu in 2007. “Later the species was found at Tirumala forests and some parts in Karnataka in 2014. Factors about the reproductive capacity of the snake is not known,” he added.
