Universities require uninterrupted funds and it is not possible for governments to fund them regularly. Industry must come forward and there is a need for an industry-university interface,” said President Pranab Mukherjee.
Hyderabad: “Universities require uninterrupted funds and it is not possible for governments to fund them regularly. Industry must come forward and there is a need for an industry-university interface,” said President Pranab Mukherjee.
While addressing a close to 20,000 gathering at the A Grounds of Osmania University on the occasion of the centenary celebrations on Wednesday, the President said that universities should be places of higher learning and a place of free exchange of ideas, a place where mighty minds of teachers and students interact without bondage and external imposition.
That is the ideal objective of a university. He went on to add that a university should focus on basic research and innovation. Indian universities were in the forefront for almost 1600 years but great universities such as Nalanda are in ruins now.
Recollecting his talk with the director of IIT Kharagpur he said that while all the students of IITs get 100% campus placement head for multinational companies across the world but few do basic research and India lags way behind in international research arena.
If Indian universities have to make a mark in international fora, they need to focus on basic research and innovation, the President said. While applauding the role of Osmania University, the President said that the VII Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan established the institution with a dream to make it a centre of excellence.
“We cannot be satisfied with few IITs, we need to develop our universities as temples of modern learning and people across the world should come flocking to them,” said Pranab Mukherjee.
Earlier in his welcome speech, Osmania University Vice Chancellor Prof S Ramachandram said that the state government grant of Rs 200 crore to the university was a good gesture. The foundation stone was also unveiled for the centenary administrative building and pylon for the building.
The inaugural ceremony went off without a glitch as a few students who wanted to protest on issues such as hostel facilities and others decided not to raise them.
The President of India along with Governor of Telangana E S L Narasimhan, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, Union Minister of State and Labour and Employment Bandaru Dattatreya, Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari, K Keshava Rao, MP, Rajya Sabha and GHMC Mayor Bonthu Rammohan arrived at the venue exactly at the appointed time of 12:30 pm.
