Auto driver knifed to death by chain snatcher

Hyderabad: It was around 3 pm on Saturday. Traffic was slowly picking up on the posh Road # 7 in Banjara Hills as the weekend mood began.

Shattering the peace on the road, a man standing by the side of his motorcycle near a reputed government school adopted by NGO Gati was viciously attacked by a knife-wielding assailant in broad daylight creating panic among the residents and passers-by.

The victim began shouting for help and tried to ward off the attack with his hands but in vain. He suffered cuts on his hands before the assailant inflicted multiple wounds on his neck, cheek and head. None of the passers-by came to his rescue as the victim bled to death.

Somebody called the police and the Banjara Hills police rushed to the crime scene. Assistant Commissioner of Police N Murali, Inspector Srinivas accompanied by the police personnel arrived at the place. A clues team was pressed into service to gather clues.

In the meantime, the police could identify the victim as 28-year-old M Ratnachari, a resident of NBT Nagar in Road #12, Banjara Hills. Further enquiries revealed that Ratnachari eked his livelihood by plying an auto-rickshaw.

A native of Atmakur village of Nalgonda district, he migrated to Hyderabad in search of work. Before taking up driving, he was arrested earlier for theft. However, he put an end to thefts and had been working as auto-rickshaw driver, the police said.

The police suspect the murder could have been executed by Waseem, a chain snatcher living in Singadakunta area of Banjara Hills, since the chain snatcher bore grudge against Ratnachari thinking that the latter was a police informer.

According to the police, Waseem is wanted in some chain snatching cases reported in Saroornagar police limits and he believes that Ratnachari was acting as police informer to get him arrested in those cases.

The police are collecting CCTV footage from around the crime scene to analyse and identify the killer and the actual motive behind the murder.
