Hyderabad: Dredging works are to begin at Nagarjuna Sagar Dam from Wednesday (July 19) by Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) to clean the beds of the dam and cater to the water supply needs of the city. The Water Board has already made arrangements for the water supplies for the next three weeks by the time of which the dredging works are expected to be completed restoring the water capacity required for two-thirds of the city population.

Due to scanty rainfall, water levels at Nagarjuna Sagar remain at the lowest of 501.2 feet for the last few weeks. As alternative arrangements were made for water supply for the coming few weeks, HMWS&SB is now all set to start the dredging works at the dam from Wednesday, to clear the bed and improve the current drinking water capacity.

The Board’s Chief General Manager(CGM) Vijay Kumar Reddy has said on Tuesday that the works will begin with an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore and will be completed in 3 weeks. ``Dredging works will be completed by August 10 until which alternate arrangements have been made for the water supplies.” Vijay Kumar said.

Previously, HMWS&SB had requested for 2 Thousand Million Cubic (TMC) feet of water from Srisailam out of which, the water board official said that 1.6 TMC has already been received. With another 114 Million Gallons per Day (MGD) coming from Godavari and 48 Million Gallons per Day (MGD) from Manjeera, the officer claimed that the city water supplies are intact for the coming few weeks. ``

There is no issue with water supplies currently as alternative arrangements have been made until the dredging works are completed,” he said. Vijay Kumar further said that arrangements for the dredging work have been completed and pipelines and channels have been widened for a better and faster flow of the water.
