Secunderabad: The 184-year-old Secunderabad Railway Station with its front elevation reflecting Asaf Jahi’s architectural dexterity, is one of the biggest and busiest railway stations in the country. Transformation from being a private railway network built by Nizams under Nizam’s Guaranteed State Railway to the headquarters of the SouthCentral Railways (SCR), the railway station has evolved into a major hub of activities.
Only a few traces of Nizam era markings remain visible. Now, the railway station is witnessing a total transformation. Plans are afoot to elevate it to international standards.
The Nizam had provided all the resources and money for the railway line from Secunderabad to Wadi Junction in Karnataka, connecting Hyderabad with the Great Indian Peninsular Railways. This was the first time Hyderabad was introduced to the railways. Kacheguda Railway Station was constructed as the railway headquarters in the year 1916.
Soon after the Independence, in 1951, the Nizam’s Guaranteed State Railways was merged with Indian Railways under the Ministry of Railways with headquarters in Mumbai.
The Secunderabad Railway Station has been witnessing development continuously and it has soon emerged as the main hub of activity especially after the creation of South Central Railway in the year 1966 with Secunderabad Station as its headquarters. The station was further certified by ISO-9001 in the year 2005 for quality management in ticket booking, parcel, luggage booking and train management on the platform.
Today, the station falls under A-1 Category of railway stations handling around 1.5 lakh users and 230 passenger trains earning an estimated Rs 2 crores every day. The Railways will spend Rs 282 crore to elevate the Secunderabad Railway Station to international standards. The public-private marketing project will be callingthe bidding soon to take up the project.
