Hyderabad: Drawing parallels between the zamindari system and the government’s initiative of forming coordination committees of farmers, Telangana Political Joint Action Committee (TJAC) chairman Prof Kodandaram felt that the present government was imposing all kinds of restrictions on farmers through government orders (GOs).

Addressing a round-table conference organised by Rythu JAC at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram here on Wednesday, he said the leaders of the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) were being bestowed with unlimited powers to control farming community in the name of coordination by releasing government orders.

Recalling that the earlier Zamindari and Jagirdari system created all kinds of hurdles to farmers, he said the current mechanism would push the farmers to the brink. “The unelected committees which are to be filled through nominations will become vehicles for influence-peddling by the ruling party's representatives.

The nominated committees being given decision-making powers for implementation of government schemes, selection of beneficiaries, authentication of land records, etc means complete undermining of the Panchayat Raj system and local democratic governance. Hence, the farmers should oppose the initiative which would be of no help to genuine farmers,” he said.

While assuring that he would be calling for an all-party meeting shortly over the issue, TJAC chairman demanded that the government withdraw the GOs 39 and 42. Alleging that the GOs were undemocratic in nature, he affirmed that the farmers would oppose the government decision which would not help bring progress but end up in harassment of poor farmers. He demanded the withdrawal of the GOs and also demanded that these committees have no role in the process of land survey being initiated by the government.

Anvesh Reddy (Congress Kisan Cell), Dr Prasad Rao (Telangana Rythu Sangham), Kiran Vissa and B Kondal (Rythu Swarajya Vedika), Ashalatha and Usha Seethalakshmi (Mahila Kisan Adhikar Manch), Ravichander (Telangana Praja Front), Andolu Krishna (Telangana Sarpanch Forum), Gangadhar Rao (Lok Satta) and others participated in the conference.
