Hyderabad: With the dispute over utilisation of river Krishna water between Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh governments reaching a crescendo, the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) has called for an emergency meeting with the representatives from the two States on Friday in Hyderabad.

The KRMB Member-Secretary Sameer Chatterjee asked Telangana Engineer–In- Chief C Muralidhar and his AP counterpart to attend the meeting and submit proposals regarding water requirement for the year. While AP government has already demanded 17 tmcft of water to meet drinking and irrigation needs from Srisailam reservoir, the Telangana government forwarded a fresh proposal seeking 20 tmcft of water in addition to 20 tmcft it had already sought recently to meet drinking water needs.

The Telangana government wants KRMB to permit it to draw 20 tmcft water from Nagarjuna Sagar for drinking purpose in Hyderabad and fluoride hit Nalgonda district. The additional 20 tmcft of water would be to supply water to Mahbubnagar and Nagarkurnool districts from Srisailam reservoir to quench the thirst of the drought- hit districts for a year.

The issue of drawing water from Pothireddypadu Head Regulator and Muchumarri Lift Irrigation scheme by AP government would also be taken up at the meeting. TS government lodged a complaint with the KRMB for releasing water from Srisailam to the above projects without the Board’s consent.

Top officials of the Telangana Irrigation Department told The Hans India that the TS government would submit evidences with regard to the exploitation of Krishna water by AP government including release of water from Pulichintala project even when TS was facing water crisis in August this year.

The Board would also finalise water allocations between the two states depending on inflows in Srisailam reservoir. Water levels in the reservoir has reached above 855 feet as against 885 feet FRL (Full Reservoir Level) due to heavy inflows from Almatti, Narayanpet and Jurala projects since a week.
