Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) contract employees working at Kasu Brahmananda Reddy (KBR) Park are demanding salary hikes. The cleaners, 31 in number, claim that other park workers are receiving Rs 10,500 when compared to their Rs 8,400 salary.

Moreover, the women workers claim that they were assaulted and robbed by hooligans in the park premises.
“A few months ago, when I was working here in the afternoon, I was thrashed by two robbers. They took my gold chain that was about five grams and I had to spend Rs 3000 for my treatment.

Though I filed a police complaint, I did not get my gold back till now,” a worker said. The employees claimed that the other contract workers in the city are getting paid more than them. “The workers in the Lotus Pond (park) received about Rs 10,500 but their salaries were reduced to 8,400 after we started demanding salary hike.

But, the labourers in Jalagam Vengal Rao Park still receive Rs 10,500 salary,” said another woman employee. “We work from 9 am to 5 pm and hardly avail leaves. The government should consider our pleas and increase our salary because it is difficult to make ends meet with this menial amount,” said Laxamma, who has been working in the park for 17 years.

She added that the snake menace in the park is uncontrollable. “I see at least three snakes a day while working. We catch and release it in the forest area of the park but, it is an additional task for us apart from cleaning.”

Director of Urban Biodiversity (GHMC) Damodar Vengala said, “The department has been paying minimum wages to the contract workers according to the GO released.” He further claimed that all the workers are being paid equally.
