Hyderabad: There being no let-up in extreme weather conditions, many parts of the city were pounded by multiple spells of heavy rains on Friday, more so in the evening. In line with the predictions of the weather department, rains lashed several parts of city, with Quthbullapur recording 61.8 mm rainfall, followed by Madhapur (58.8 mm), Balanagar (28 mm) and so on.

Besides, rains hit Kukatpally, Moosapet and other adjacent areas on Friday. Most of the areas in Secunderabad, including the Cantonment and Bowenpally, experienced heavy rain, apart from Begumpet. Other parts of the city experienced light rain in the evening. Due to heavy water logging, there were traffic jams at several places.

Personnel from GHMC and Police Department were seen clearing areas affected by water logging. There was inundation at Afzalgunj in front of the Central Library, halting traffic movement for a long time. Enquiries revealed that the GHMC staff did not clear this point during rains in the last week, resulting in slowing down of the traffic from MGBS and Darul-shifa.

The weather department has predicted that intermittent rains would continue over the next one week. “Under the influence of this system, the State will continue to witness spells of rain,” said Y K Reddy, director (in-charge), IMD Hyderabad. Hyderabad and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts received excess rainfall to the extent of 61 per cent.

Officials of the weather department initially attributed the rains to a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which is 4.5 km above sea level.

However, after two days, the forecast is that there would be a significant decrease in rainfall intensity due to the intensification of the cyclonic circulation into a low-pressure area. Since this intensification was expected to move in a northwesterly direction, the areas around coastal Andhra Pradesh would witness bouts of heavy rain.

Most parts of the State, including Hyderabad, will witness a decrease in rains. The southern districts of Telangana, adjacent to Rayalaseema, may continue to witness scattered light rains.
