Hyderabad: Admitting that there was shortage of nurses in the government hospitals, Health Minister C Laxma Reddy on Thursday said that the recruitment process would take time and added that the district selection committee was in the process of filling the existing vacancies either on contract or outsourcing basis.
The Minister was replying to a question on the shortage of nurses in the hospitals across the state by the BJP member K Laxman during the Question Hour on Thursday. The Minister said that out of the 10,718 sanctioned posts, the nurse posts constitute 5,746. He said that there would be two types of posts - promotion-based and direct recruitment.
For the direct recruitment, the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) had already issued notification. He said that majority of the vacant posts would be filled but the recruitment process takes time. He said that the Congress party did not take up recruitment for long time leading to the shortage of the nurses. Replying to a question, the Minister said that setting up of nursing directorate was under consideration of the government.
Earlier, Laxman alleged that there was severe shortage of nurses in almost all the government hospitals. He said that as per the WHO norms there should be one nurse for six to seven patients but there was huge shortage and there were vacancies even in the sanctioned posts. He said that Gandhi Hospital has 1,012 beds and as per norm there should be 511 nurses but there are 211 vacancies. Similarly, in the Osmania Hospital, the bed strength is 1,113 and there should be 800 nurses but the government sanctioned posts were 312 and still 50 posts were vacant. He revealed that a block in Osmania Medical College (Quli Qutub Shah) was closed only because of the shortage of nurses.
MIM member Ahmed Pasha Quadri demanded CCTV cameras in the hospitals to avoid attacks in the hospitals. He said that Osmania Hospital was number one in terms of services but now it has gone to the bottom. BJP member N V S S Prabhakar wanted the government to provide salaries to the cleaners who were working without salaries for the last five months.
